Wheat Allergy



Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction to foods, including wheat, which is one of the top 8 food allergens in the United States.Allergic reactions may result from eating wheat, but may also occur by inhaling wheat flour. Wheat is included in many foods, including beer, soy sauce, ketchup and other suspect foods.

Avoiding wheat is the main treatment for wheat allergy. If you mistakenly eat wheat, you may need medication to manage allergic reactions.

Whey allergy may be confused with celiac disease, but these symptoms are different. Wheat allergy produces antibodies that cause allergy to proteins found in wheat. In celiac disease patients, certain proteins in wheat gluten cause abnormal immune system reactions.


Children or adults with wheat allergies may develop symptoms within minutes to hours after eating those containing wheat. For symptoms of wheat allergy,

  • Swelling of the mouth and throat, itching, stimulation
  • Urticaria, itching and rash, swelling of the skin
  • Nasal congestion
  • headache
  • Itching, watery eyes
  • Dyspnea
  • Convulsions, nausea or vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • Anaphylaxis

Most young children with wheat allergy grow from 3 to 5 years old.


Wheat allergy can cause life-threatening reactions called anaphylaxis. In addition to other signs and symptoms of wheat allergy, anaphylaxis can cause:

  • Swelling and strain of the throat
  • Chest pain and tension
  • Severe dyspnea
  • Dysphagia
  • Pale blue skin color
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Fast heartbeat

If you are having wheat allergy, exposure to wheat protein will prepare immune system for allergic reaction. Allergy, globulin, gliadin, gluten can be allergic to any of the four wheat proteins.

Wheat protein source

Some sources of wheat proteins are obvious as bread, but all wheat proteins (especially gluten) are found in many prepared foods, as well as in cosmetics, bath products and fabrics. For foods containing wheat protein,

  • Bread and bread crumbs
  • Cake and muffin
  • cookie
  • Breakfast cereal
  • pasta
  • Couscous
  • Farina
  • Semolina
  • spell
  • cracker
  • beer
  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
  • soy sauce
  • Several condiments such as ketchup
  • Meat products such as hot dogs and cold cuts
  • Dairy products such as ice cream
  • Natural fragrance
  • Gelatinized starch
  • Modified food starch
  • Vegetable gum
  • licorice
  • Jelly Beans
  • Hard candy

In the case of wheat allergy, there may be allergies to barley, oats, rye, but less opportunities. If you are not allergic to cereals other than wheat, the wheatless meal is not more restrictive than the gluten free meal.

Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis

People suffering from wheat allergy may experience symptoms if they exercise within a few hours after eating wheat. Body changes caused by exercises either trigger an allergic reaction or exacerbate the immune system response to wheat protein.This condition usually results in life threatening anaphylaxis.

Risk Factors

Certain factors may increase the risk of developing wheat allergies.

Family history.

If your parents suffer allergy such as food allergies and hay fever, the risk of allergy to wheat and other foods will be high.


Wheat allergy is most common in infants and young children with immature immune and digestive system. Most children surpass wheat allergy, but adults can develop it.
